Designing and Making Mechanical Toys in the Classroom
We have the complete range of resources need to teach this inspiring and creative topic. Students will gain an understanding of basic mechanical principles whilst working on a popular and engaging project.
We suggest that you introduce the topic by showing one of our videos, either Cabaret Mechanical Video or How to Make Automata. For classroom display and initial ideas and inspiration we have a Set of 2 posters and Teachers notes
It is also a good idea to make up some of the inexpensive card cutouts as working models for classroom display.
For the designing and making process we suggest using our Automata Kits, they can be used in small groups of 3 or 4 pupils. No tools or glue are required and students can test the movements of different shaped cams before starting on their own pieces. The kits are re-usable and hundreds of different designs can be made.
We also have several useful books, including Cabaret Mechanical Movement, (now sold over 8,000 copies) the book is packed with diagrams, information and useful tips on making automata. Automata and Mechanical Toys by Rodney Peppe is an excellent research book which gives historical background to the contemporary automata movement as well as practical advice on making automata.
